It"s simply astonishing how many websites are up and running with a complete disregard for search engine optimization. In fact, in my experience with client websites, and just browsing the web, at least half of the sites I encounter are built totally wrong - and that estimate is low! The truth is, I have never seen a client website where the developer has gotten it right.
Most often this is for two reasons. One - it"s a website made by a designer who places all of the importance on the design, with no regard for search engines or usability. Second, it"s a website built by a coding geek who loves piecing HTML and PHP together with the latest jQuery widdley-doo. Now, don"t get me wrong, I love beautiful design and the latest coding tricks equally, but there"s a third element that is just as important - so called "on-page SEO".
Basically, this refers to how the website is structured and built. Everything from how your titles are labeled to how your CSS is built, page-loading speed, as well as the obvious stuff like meta tags and description. Without even thinking about things like keyword density on a page, or siloing or more complex code structuring tricks, getting just the basics right is absolutely essential. Now, if you"re not a web developer who understands SEO, the pitfalls are many. I"ve made every mistake there is to make at one point or another, and learned what works and what doesn"t by trial and error, and also by keeping up with the latest GOOGLE/BING/YAHOO updates. So, don"t try to optimize your page yourself if you"re not 100% sure about what the implications are, hire a professional.
The rewards to having a high-performing website that not only ranks high, but converts well are obvious. The higher you place in the search results, the more visitors you get, and the more people call or email your business. The key factor to showing up in the correct search results pages is research. Personally, I don"t do anything until I am sure there"s a reasonable amount of highly targeted traffic for a given keyword, and have thoroughly analyzed the competition. Once that is done and I"ve picked where I want the pages on my website to rank, I can begin optimizing the page.
Remember, everything that happens on the on-page SEO for a website needs to work in concert with your social media sites, blogs, Google Places page and AdWords campaigns. Research, strategy and planning are essential components to consider before implementing your on-page SEO. Lastly, there are no real tricks to getting the on-page part of your SEO correct. Google makes no secret about what works, and anything too sneaky gets filtered out.
